According to the most recent ABS Women’s Safety Survey (1996), 23% of women who have been married or in a de facto relationship have experienced violence at the hands of their partner. However, because incidents of domestic violence often go unreported (the ABS Crime and Safety Survey of 2002 estimates only 31% of victims of assault and 20% of female victims of sexual assault report the incidents to the police), the statistics do not adequately represent the actual violence that is occurring in our society every day.
Currently there are 55 women’s refuge centres in NSW which take in those who have the ability to leave their situation. In 2002 these centres housed 7,900 women.
